How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
