How to Replace a Broken Window?

One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. This repair will take only 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
