How To

How to replace a broken window

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old glass, you must first lift out the screws holding the windowpane in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry cloth or paper towel to wipe away any dirt from the surface of the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Move on to the next piece of pane. Push it into the opening in the frame. Continue inserting the panes until the entire window is assembled. You can seal the gap between the panes with a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. Two small pieces of wood should be placed along the edges of each hole if the crack is near the corner. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

Apply silicone caulking around the edges of the frame after the glass has been replaced. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
