How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean the new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. A spray bottle filled with water, rubbing alcohol and water can be used to clean debris stuck beneath the glass.

Third step: Reinstall the new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Finally, let the caulking cure overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
