How to Replace a Broken Window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. The job involves repairing the damage done to the glass in your home. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, take the old glasses out of their frames

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.

Second step: Clean the new glass

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Reattach the window panes into the frames. Begin by pressing down on the outermost pane's lower edge with a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. Once the caulking is fully set, don't disturb it. If you don't wait long enough, you could cause the caulking to crack when you remove it.
