How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a plier to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You can cause cracking in the caulking if it isn't left enough time.
