How to Replace a Broken Window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. The repair should take approximately 30 minutes. However, if you are not familiar with how to replace broken panes of glass, you may cause further damage to the home. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
