How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. You could end up causing more damage to your house if you don't know the best way to replace a damaged pane. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

First, remove the old glass from its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, take out the lock at top center of the window frame's bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). The last step is to gently loosen all remaining screws with a tool. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

The fifth step is to seal the area.

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will seal the glass to the wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Let the caulking set overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
